Afrika Gameplay Details Appear
Posted by Brad Hilderbrand, 162 days ago Jun 16, 2008 12:13

Now that the air of mystery surrounding Afrika is beginning to clear, we can stop wondering what the game is and start wondering how the game plays. Thankfully, details have begun to emerge, and we can all begin to channel our inner photojournalist.

Early word is that the game will be mission-based, and that your character will be tasked with taking pictures of specific animals in their natural habitat. There doesn’t seem to be any sort of time limit on these missions, so you can take your time finding your subject and then snapping a most glorious photo. Apparently, Sixaxis controls will play a major role in the game, with motion controls handling aim, focus, angle, and clarity. Hurry and snap off the picture as soon as you see the animal, and you’ll likely be left with an unframed, blurry mess that won’t net you any coin. Take your time to get that perfect picture though, and you’ll be rewarded with cash money to use for buying newer, fancier cameras.

The other information that has come out states that you will not be driving your jeep yourself, and will rather have to rely on an AI tour guide to do the driving for you. There is no word yet on if you can direct your guide to take you to certain areas and stop at specific points, or if this is going to be more of an "on rails" affair where your partner is programmed to take a preset route for the duration of the mission.

Every time I get news about Afrika, I have Vietnam flashbacks of Pokemon Snap. I’m seriously hoping this game can restore my faith in photojournalism as it is translated to gaming. I’d hate for my most authoritative experience on the matter to be restricted to trying to lure out the ever-elusive Bulbasaur.
