THQ is already well-known for its forays into professional wrestling via the WWE license. Now the company is ready to get a little more "real" by acquiring a license based on the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The publisher has officially announced UFC 2009 Undisputed, which will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
The game is promising to offer a full stable of over 80 of current UFC fighters, as well as a create-a-fighter mode which will allow you to design your own brawler. Of course, just like any other sports game, you’ll then put your created brawler in matches, use training points to up your stats, and compete at higher and higher levels until you ultimately challenge one of the big shots for the UFC title.
With mixed martial arts, and UFC in particular, growing rapidly in popularity, this title could turn out to be quite a success if proper steps are taken. THQ has a pretty solid history with fighting games, and it shouldn’t be too hard for them to translate the striking and grappling systems present in so many WWE titles over into an UFC game.
Undisputed is scheduled to hit store shelves in Spring 2009, so you’ve got plenty of time to work on your striking, kicking, and rear naked chokeholds. Just don’t come crying to me when you show up at your first fight and get the stuffing beat out of you, it happens to all of us.
