Yesterday, Sony boss Kaz Hirai revealed the the company would be offering movie downloads for the PS3 via PSN in the very near future, possibly later this summer. Tthe plan may have a bit of a snag as, according to a report from Variety, the only studio signed up so far to release movies is... Sony Picture Studios.
According to reporter Ben Fritz:
"Sources at numerous major studios confirmed to me that while they have all talked to Sony, none have yet made a deal. The only one that’s definitely on board so far is, for obvious reasons, Sony Pictures."
The company announced the service in an attempt to compete with Microsoft’s own downloads on Xbox Live, which currently feature movies from studios like Paramount and Warner Bros., as well as TV shows from major networks such as Fox. While it is not being suggested that any of these companies have rejected Sony’s overtures, it is obvious that Sony will need their support in order to give the service any real weight.
The wording of the original Sony announcement also suggests that the service will start on the PS3, and then migrate over to the PSP in 2010. However, first the company needs to get the major movie studios on board so the service is more than just another way to buy Sony movies.
