With the much-anticipated release of PS3 firmware update 2.40 coming tomorrow, Sony has taken some time to answer questions about the new features, particularly the Trophy aspect. Seen by many as Sony’s version of Xbox Live’s Gamerscore, Trophies will be awarded for certain in-game feats, much in the same way Achievements are handled by the Xbox 360.
One major question about the whole system has been if gamers who currently own PAIN, Super Stardust HD, or Warhawk (the only currently released games that support Trophies) would automatically receive trophies once the service was initiated. The answer is no: if you want the Trophies, you’re going to have to go out there and do it all over again.
While Sony itself did not explain the reasoning behind this, Kotaku has speculated that it’s due to the prevalence of downloadable game saves which already have completely maxed scores and attributes in all the games that might be attached to the trophy service. Therefore, simply allowing the PS3 to scan game saves and award trophies would likely lead to rampant cheating, an issue Xbox Live recently tackled by deleting entire scores for some users and labeling them with a scarlet letter of sorts.
So if you currently own one of the games that support Trophies then you may want to spend today honing your skills; tomorrow we start playing for reals.
