In a surprise move, Sony announced at the Tokyo Game Show this week that it would be releasing new software known as PSP Plus that will allow for PSP control via wireless PlayStation 3 controllers. This new cross-functionality support will add dual analog control to supported PSP games, as well as a rumble feature.
Currently, the only game set to utilize the new technology is the upcoming Resistance: Retribution, but we firmly believe the feature will be slowly implemented to eventually encompass nearly all newly released PSP titles.
This is truly a major step for Sony’s handheld, which has been denounced in the past for featuring only one small control nub, making it difficult to play certain action/adventure games and shooters. Now the promise of dual analog control and rumble support makes the PSP’s stock suddenly rise in a lot of ways. Now what we’re really hoping for is some sort of cradle or stand so we can hold the Dualshock 3 while playing the PSP without having to crane and contort our necks into various odd positions.
