Burnout to the future?

Criterion has promised to feed us a steady supply of information on their major DLC updates planned for next year, and over the weekend we got word on their latest plans. Sometime in 2009, the company is planning to release the Legendary Cars Pack, and trust us when we say you’re going to want to get this one.

There are some pretty cool offerings in the pack, including the Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit, and GT Nighthawk, but those aren’t why you’re here. The reason you need this set of cars is for the Jansen 88 Special, because it’s basically the DeLorean from Back to the Future.

In an apparent tribute to one of the greatest films ever, Criterion has created a car which not only looks like Marty McFly’s time machine, but shares several important details. For example, when you fill the boost meter and engage turbo, your tires will leave a streak of flames behind the car. Most importantly, when you tap L3 the wheels retract and this beast hovers. If only they had included a little Doc Brown driving it I’d never play another game again.

So while the Jansen 88 Special can’t take you back in time to before the big crash that cost you the race, it’s still pretty badass in its own right. We don’t yet know the cost of the pack, though we’re assuming it’s going to go under the category of "not free." Still, if you’re going to charge me for content, I can’t think of anything greater than this. Suddenly I feel a deep-seated need for hair metal and denim jackets.
