After totaling up the votes made by the legions of visitors to their website Merrian-Webster online has announced the results of it’s Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year contest. So far the winning word has not been printed in an actual Merriam Webster dictionary but it now does appear in the online version for all to see and, in the future, it may just make it’s way thither into actual print. The winning word of the 2007 Merriam-Webster Word of the Year for 2007 is w00t, or woot, but however you spell it we gamers know that it is a sound of triumph or exhilaration made when we’ve put our enemies to rest or just have something to celebrate both on or offline. It can also be an acronym for the phrase “we owned the other team” but however you use it or spell it it always means good things for someone.
The word will appear in Merriam-Webster’s Open Dictionary as follows:
1. w00t (interjection)
expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word "yay"
w00t! I won the contest!
