Sony New PS3 Firmware update brings Blu Ray Alive
Posted by James Barr, 154 days ago Mar 21, 2008 23:30

Sony has just released some information regarding a new firmware v2.20 update for the Playstation 3. After many were left disappointed after the last firmware update which was just to patch some online operations for online games, this firmware update would come as relief as this adds some great functionality to Blu-Ray along with some neat new features.

Tell us what you think of this update in talk.thegamereviews.com forums.
If you have questions for Sony, ask them there and we will do our best to get answers.

Arguably the biggest new feature is the support for Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 which is also known as BD-Live. What this will allow you to do is access the Internet while watching a Blu-ray film that supports 2.0 to obtain more content and special features.

You may of heard about this with HD-DVD with such films like Transformers and Bourne Ultimatum taking advantage of this technology.

Of course each discs features will vary from disc to disc but this will bring new and exciting experiences to your already Hi-Def movie experience. The first films that will take advantage of this technology are The 6th Day and Walk Hard which will be available on April 8th.

Taken from Playstation Blog here are some of the other features that will be included in this update.

• The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.

• You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB.

• Resume Play - begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.

• Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.

• The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.

There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 – which Sony will provide more specifics as the update is about to go live.

Stay tuned for more news as we get it.
