With only days before the release of Grand Theft Auto IV, arguably spring’s most talked-about game, one final question remains: which version will see the best sales?
Several analysts now claim that they expect the PS3 version to sell better, thanks to the success of previous versions. Edward Williams, from BMO Capital Markets, claims, "So many people who owned the PS2 went into the PlayStation family because of ’GTA’. The release of ’GTA4’ could expedite their decision to upgrade."
GTA4 will be included as a special pack-in game with a limited edition version of the 40GB PS3. The software itself, though, is overshadowed by the Xbox 360 version, which will offer exclusive downloadable content later this year.
While the likelihood of PS3 versions far outselling the Xbox 360 software appears unlikely due to Microsoft’s vastly superior install base, the game could give Sony the boost it needs to overcome lagging sales of their living room hardware. If nothing else, gamers waiting for a killer app to appear on their favorite Blu-Ray player now have something to look forward to.
